Should TRA license more telecom providers in UAE?

According to TRA website they have granted license to a new UAE based satellite operator ,Yahsat

the satellite will be the first 3 band/multibeam hybrid satellite in the region , also covering Africa & Europe with spot beams.

True , but many subscribers in UAE are not happy with the current 2 operators who seem to have carved up the market like a cake and left others out. Specially when you have Etisalat offering the same services internationally (Egypt , mobily) for 1/4th what they charge people in UAE which is unbelievable.
For example the mobile data package is 460 in UAE while in Egypt it is around 100 AED approx. The per minute charge there is a fraction of what we pay. And the internet access is basically a ripoff in UAE. And the proxy slows down everything on top of that.

Yahsat says it may offer 2-way satellite broadband for 149 AED approx. That beats Etisalat’s rate. But of course you have to buy the Ka-band antenna for that.

I strongly feel they should allow more operators.
Also feel that giants like vodafone & all should be given a chance.
More the operators, more the benefits for users. It gives users a gateway to more advanced technologies & stuff! Also the call rates and all like in india, previously 1 local call was 200paise / min, now, after the introduction around 10 operators it has become 10paise/min!

I don’t know about places in India but I usually go to Tiger Direct for computers and peripherals. I have found their prices very reasonable. It’s an American company but I’d imagine they ship anywhere you want.

Microsoft in Telecom /10.05.2007

Andrew LUND, Communications Sector Director, Microsoft CEE, introduced the services Microsoft has to offer to telecommunications operators, at the Communications Day in Bucharest on May 10, 2007.

These services are based on a new concept in the industry: Software as a Service. Microsoft also hopes that once the convergence between telecom and media will take over in these two industries, this will blur the traditionally high barriers to entry around telecom operators and their suppliers.

Andrew LUND, Communications Sector Director, Microsoft CEE:

“Communications sector is about 5% of the turnover that Microsoft makes in the world. If you think we are a 50 million dollar company, it may not seem much, but it is a very important strategic part of our business. It includes telcos, fixed, mobile, cable and it also includes media and entertainment companies. So we work a lot with big TV companies, big radio companies, the idea being that convergence of media with telecom will happen.

There are software solutions which we produce – software solutions that we produce that help the telco operators function more effectively while reducing cost. An example of that could be in customer care, database consolidation, could be in OSS/BSS. So these are kind of heavy bucket Services Oriented Architecture solutions.

mySpace and KPN are two examples of customers where we helped drive bottom line efficiency.

And it was interesting when Romtelecom CEO said this morning that they is investing 200 million euros to modernise their infrastructure. If you have a Cisco sales man in front of you, that is not a lot of money.

So what we are trying to do is enable the CIO or CTO office to spend less money on running the business – consolidating databases, running customer care more efficiently, using software programs to drive down costs, so they can help the telco operators focus on driving their revenues.

But I am not going to talk about that today. I am going to talk about top tier, which is about enabling telcos increase their top line revenues.

The changes in technology, convergence of voice and date, fixed and mobile, talked a lot about that today, price based comoditisation. One thing is for sure: the more competitive the market, is the lower the prices go down. Which is good for consumer, is good for the businesses: people paying less for their telecom services.

It is hard for the telco operators, because they then have to add more value, add more differentiation in the services that they offer today.

So what are we doing about that?

At the bottom you can see the way we communicate with people – it could be consumers or it could be businesses – from PC to TV to mobile devices. It is ubiquous already.

What we think is happening is around the middle cloud there – you know telcos like to talk a lot about clouds, so we put a cloud as well – and that is about meshing the services that you provide today. It could be ringtones. Meshing up things that we provide could be like Hotmail. Meshing up things like third party companies provide could be something like iTunes.

And of course there is the OSS/BSS services that make these all work together effectively and the billing engine that drives the relationship with the customer.

All these different areas work together and what we are trying to do is build a framework solution that enables them to interact together:

In the middle you have the service provider, the telco or the media company that is offering services on a hosted model.

On the right side you can see the Microsoft that we are now offering as a Software-as-a-Service model. This is a new concept and it is really taking effect.

BT is probably our biggest customer in the software as a service model in Europe. And they have got many thousands of customers buying a lot these products.

One of them is hosted CRM where a small company – 50 people or 20 sales people – they do not need to have a big IT department running a CRM solution. So they pay like 25-30 euros a month per user:

In the consumer segment, it is more or less the same model, excerpt the products change. So they have got Microsoft TV. Microsoft TV is actually the front end.”

BlackBerry Compatible?

I need to buy a new BlackBerry and would like to do so second hand because of the gross overpricing of brand new ones. My service provider is MTS (Manitoba Telecom Services).

Anyway, my question is, do I need to buy a BlackBerry that was previously used for MTS or can I buy any BlackBerry previously used for any service provider (eg. Rogers)?

You do not have to buy one that is branded by MTS, you just need to make sure that the one your getting is for your network type.. GSM vs CDMA etc..
SO if Rogers is the same type of network then a Rogers branded phone will be fine. You will however need to make sure that it is unlocked from all carriers..so you can use it on your network.

im looking to change from british telecom?

to another telephone service provider as bt has gotten very expensive, any ideas which ones to try? uk only thanx. i have bt phoneline and broadband

well, we tried this, and went back to BT as soon as we could.

yes, BT is expensive, but, you get what you pay for. brother had talk talk… sister had sky… and they both had lots of problems… and by the time sky or talk talk were anywhere near the (NON) limits imposed by BT, the cost was to a few pennies, the same.

i lost my connection at 10am saturday, i phone the engineer and someone was out by 2pm..on a saturday.

yes everyone does it cheaper, btu NO ONE =offers their level of cover, or download quota at the same price…

How do i deal with spurious persons so as to avoid them from duplicating a retail recharge card?

If i were to launch retail cards that allow the customer to activate my services such as those that follow the same activation procedures as that of Hutch or Airtel (my services arent into telecom i.e. i’m not a mobile services provider), how do i protect my product from getting duplicated by spurious persons.
I want to launch retail cards similar to the pattern that are used by Mobile services providers, but mine is not a telecom service. I dont want any spurious individual duplicating my cards (i am patenting my service) and i want my customers to be aware such that they get the authentic retail cards of my service from licensed dealers and not get cheated. How do i protect my customers ?
e.g. if im a spurious person and i create a card say exactly the same as ‘X’ recharge card by Hutch and sell it to a small shop for further sale and the end user buys the card and uses the registration number, and finds out that such a number is invalid.

How do i stop such an activity from taking place and how do i ensure that my customer is aware of whats authentic and not?

i dont know really………….

GOP party of ‘NO’ – no voice for HC or Recession – finds voice for Telecom Masters – who are they for?

The GOP like to play the part of ‘Poor Opposition Party w/No Voice’ when it comes to working out solutions on the Recession, Health Care, Equal Pay for Women. But when their Big Telecom/Special Interest groups call they find their voice and introduce legislation (i.e. Internet Freedom Act). Where is their voice for the people. Are they only for large Corps & Special Interest group?

McCain’s bill, the Internet Freedom Act, seeks to do the opposite of what its name implies by ensuring that broadband and wireless providers can discriminate and throttle certain traffic while giving preferential treatment to other traffic. Basically, those in power or those who pay more will have better access. Apparently we have different definitions of ‘freedom’.

To keep the Internet neutral, Genachowski wants the FCC to formally adopt six principles, four of which have been employed by the FCC on a case-by-case basis since 2005.
1. Consumers are entitled to access the lawful Internet content of their choice.
2. Consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement.
3. Consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network.
4. Consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.
5. Broadband providers cannot block or degrade lawful traffic over their networks, favor certain content or applications over others and cannot "disfavor an Internet service just because it competes with a similar service offered by that broadband provider."
6. Broadband providers must be transparent about the service they are providing and how they are running their networks.

You are quite ignorant. How many times are you going to post this garbage today?

There is no "turning iNet (sic) Bandwidth over to the Telecoms", it is the telecoms who own the bandwidth and the government wants to tell them how they can manage their traffic.

People who pay more, should have better access.

I know you want to play World of Warcraft 24/7 and it makes you mad that for your $14.95 a month you might get slowed down so more important traffic can go through.
