Is it possible to roam in Okinawa, Japan via Globe Telecom in the Philippines?
I will take a trip to Okinawa, Japan next month. I live in the Philippines and I want to have contact with my family here. My network is Globe Telecom and my phone is N70. Will I be able to roam in Japan? I tried looking onto the site of Globe Telecom, but I did not see anything. If not, should I just try Smart Buddy or just buy a phone in Japan?
A friend of mine just went to Japan last Oct-Nov and he wasn’t able to use the international roaming feature of SMART. I think it would also be the same for Globe. You see, it’s because Japan has a different frequency/band system so the telecoms here in the Philippines (as of now) aren’t available there yet.
If you’re going to stay for long, a month or so, it’s better for you to just rent/buy a prepaid japanese phone from SoftBank (http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/en/) Believe it or not, they have vending machines in their convenience stores where you could get a cellphone BUT I think it has a lot of requirements. Just visit the link above.
Might be easier to keep in touch with your family and friends in the Philippines via email/online chat.
Good luck and have fun on your trip.

Posible yan with Globe! as the cliche goes.. Try to visit any Globe branch. There are lots of it. They’ll be happy to help you and they will explain more on the how-tos. BTW, Are you going for the exchange student program?
Hope that helped.

Very very possible….if you’re prepaid you have to have at least 200 pesos minimum balance or else your roaming will be disabled. Sending text message to your loved ones at home will cost you php20 per message. If they text you, they will ony be charged 1peso. If they call you, Globe will charge you php60 per minute….Yes, YOU will be charged my friend even if they are the ones calling you……. =)
Personally I think roaming sucks, but then again, thats just me =(
