My house phone provider is Virgin Media but will a cordless phone by BT work? ?

I want to buy a cordless phone for my landline home but my provider in the UK is Virgin, will the make of the cordless phone be compatable its a British Telecom model phone, and how does the cordless phone work? Do I simply plug it in the phone socket like my cord phone I use currently? Thanks for answers
